How to turn your food scraps into plant fertiliser How to turn your food scraps into plant fertiliser

Food waste fertiliser

It might not look too apeeling, but here’s how you can feed your plants with your breakfast by-products.

If a hearty serving of eggs, coffee, and a banana is a familiar breakfast scene for you, use your bin-bound food scraps to feed your plants. Eggshells are an eggcellent (sorry, we couldn’t resist) source of calcium, while banana peel provides potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus.

Ingredients

  • Eggshells
  • Used coffee grounds
  • Banana peel
  • Water

Method

1) Add your skins, shells, grounds and a splash of water into a blender and wizz ’em until they have a smooth-ish consistency

2) Add the mixture to a watering can, empty jar or jug and dilute with water

3) Get watering right away, or if you have the time, let the mixture ‘brew’ for a few hours.
