Pearing up with Fortnums

This Christmas, we have peared up with Fortnum & Mason to create a bespoke, limited edition Christmas chutney. This festive Pear, Fig & Port relish is made from surplus pears that would otherwise go to waste and £1 from each jar sold will go to the charity Centrepoint to help give homeless young people a future.

Each jar uses at least one British pear grown at Tendring Fruit Farm in Essex. These conference pears are rejected by supermarkets based on their cosmetic appearance, whether that be too big, too small, too wonky or too russeted.

This season, our pear farmer Pete Thompson estimated that they would have to discard 5 tonnes of their crop, all of which is perfectly edible, contributing to the 15 million tonnes of food & drink wasted in the UK every year.

We are really proud to be supporting Centrepoint, with £1 from each jar being donated to their work with homeless young people. Each jar sold will help ensure some of the most vulnerable young people in this country will have somewhere safe and warm to stay.

The recipe includes slow-cooked pears with ripe figs and warming spices like root ginger and cinnamon. In true festive fashion, this Christmas chutney contains a splash of port giving it a boozy rich flavour, perfect for a cheese board.
